Three Life Lessons from Survivor

Being relatable is key to success in life, whether in day-to-day relationships or when crafting works for others to enjoy. People want to see, at least a tiny bit of themselves, in you or your work. Shows like The Bachelorette or The Office are so popular because they resonate––most Americans have been on the dating scene or sat behind a desk at work. These stories are relatable.

Let’s change course for just a moment with a simple question: Have you ever been stranded on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? I would assume the answer is a “no.” So what was CBS thinking when they created Survivor, a show where 20 strangers are castaways on a remote island? Doesn’t sound very relatable, right? Quite the opposite. The show has been a wild success, one of the first reality TV shows in America that continues to this day…40 seasons and counting. You see, nearly every element of the show was designed to reflect, sometimes in unexpected ways, things we experience in real life. Let’s take a look at 3 real-world lessons you can learn from Survivor.

Embrace uncertainty

Characters on the show have little control over their lives for 39 days. Production tells them their schedule and what to wear. The weather can go from hot to cold, sunny to torrential downpour in a matter of hours. So much is out of the contestants’ control. The
